Interview
Erik van Houwelingen, Member of the Management Board, and responsible for Investment Management Clients
Robin Schouten, Executive Director Fiduciary Management, and Impact Advisor.
Van Lanschot Kempen has been active in impact investing for many years: what was the motivation for you to develop that type of offering to your clients ?

Creating positive real world outcomes is a core component of the Van Lanschot Kempen strategy as a wealth manager with long term focus. By directing capital towards innovative and impactful businesses, we aim to generate both financial returns and meaningful social and environmental outcomes. We believe that our institutional clients hold the key to scaling impact investing significantly. Our existing experience with impact solutions and fiduciary manager pedigree puts us in the sweet spot for enabling this scaling.
In 2018, we launched the Global Impact Pool in close collaboration with an institutional client with a clear goal of driving positive social and environmental change in both developing and emerging markets. By 2021, we introduced the SDG farmland fund, in close cooperation with our clients, which invests in sustainable agriculture and promotes regenerative practices, enhancing biodiversity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently, we see growing demand from existing and new clients to allocate parts of their portfolio to private debt, private equity and real assets, focused on solutions generating real world change.
You just became a NAB member: what do you expect to get from and bring to the community?

As a new NAB member, we are excited to further deepen our involvement in the impact investing community. We aim to contribute by sharing innovative investment ideas and leveraging our connections with impact fund managers, industry associations, and peers. Our goal is to share knowledge and advance the industry collectively.

Through our NAB membership, we plan to:
-
Share our knowledge on pension funds and insurance companies: through our fiduciary business we have a deep understanding of the investment process of institutional investors and their objectives and requirements for impact investments.
-
Exchange with other members on our impact framework and KPI approach: we have been very successful with setting ambitious and long term KPI’s with our clients and implementing them. Having clear and measurable client objectives makes the journey a lot easier.
-
Expand our sourcing potential: Collaborating with other NAB members will help us identify and connect with impact fund managers across various asset classes.
Overall, we look forward to both contributing to and benefiting from the collective expertise and resources of the NAB community.
What can Van Lanschot Kempen contribute to the impact investing ecosystem?

Van Lanschot Kempen is known for its long-term focus, entrepreneurial approach and investment-led culture. With like-minded impact investors, we aim to create new investment solutions or support in the growth phase of smaller impact investors. In the process, we aim to increase the investment universe for our clients. Especially when it comes to contributing to transitions and positive outcomes locally, we aim to increase the investment opportunities for our clients. Together, through the capital entrusted to us by our clients, we achieve tangible results on issues like climate change mitigation, biodiversity recovery, access to healthcare or financial inclusion, measuring our progress in actual change.
